The arms do not need to be installed for the chair to function. Have you considered a similar chair with arms that flip up such as the one below:

I bought this Westgate Series Executive Chair-High Back for my home office.I really like the high back of the chair.it gives a lot of back support.

There is a metal back support that makes the current screws too short by about 1/2 inch. I had to get a long clamp that would reach across the back in order to get the provided screws to catch the screw threads.

Probably eroded from sweat. Had on like that about 25 years ago. Took 6 months to go.

Had this chair for approx. 3 yrs. Comfy chair, sturdy, seemed to be good quality. Now it is peeling apart all over arms, seat and back. Would not recommend this chair!!!! They should have better quality on their material!! Only 3 year warranty on material
